Northeast Roots
Matt loves everything to do with horticulture. He loves plants, he loves birding and hiking has a special place in Matt’s life on the Olympic Peninsula. Matt uses his time outdoors to find inspiration for his designs. Botanizing, birding and family are what steer Matt’s attention and travel is often inspired by learning and botanizing. He visits his home and family in Pennsylvania every year, tackling a project for his Mom and Dad (last July we restored a 1950 John Deere Model B, so cool!) or visiting the numerous gardens in Pennsylvania such has his old stomping grounds at Longwood Gardens.

Longwood Gardens – Professional Horticulture Training
Matt’s skills and interests from his rural roots turned to passion when he attended the horticulture program at Longwood Gardens in Kennet Square, Pennsylvania. He spent every waking moment studying plants, taking extra classes on weekends, learning latin identifications and putting extra effort into my student gardens. After two years of immersion education in conservatories, nurseries, greenhouses, gardens, along side master gardeners, arborists, botanists, and the public he had solidified his goals and took his talents on the road.
Experience at Home and Abroad
Before Matt settled into Port Townsend, Wa and ultimately his own business he gained more experience. After a series of internships in Washington and then New Zealand he took a job at a private estate in New York. At this 350 acre garden, he added the complexity of managing a crew, working a garden through the seasons and catering to the needs of the property manager and owner. With all this under his belt, it was back to Washington, to settle in Port Townsend where his heart and talent belonged. He created Matthew Berberich Horticulture and the rest is history!
Continuing Education
Matthew is constantly absorbing new ideas in horticulture. The plant world is always changing with new innovations, rad plants, and environmental policies on the horizon it is important to stay ahead of the curve! We pride ourselves on keeping an open mind about all there is to learn within the gardening and plant community. A large portion of our resources at Matthew Berberich Horticulture, is dedicated to conservation projects in the community and educational opportunities all over the world. We love exploring new cultures, techniques, and ideas. We jump at any opportunity to learn from and give back to our community.
